Writing erotic fiction stories that steam up the room and convince readers to turn one more page and then another isn’t as easy as it may seem. Most writers erase more words than they write before getting critical scenes just right. Others may want to burn every short story or novel that they produce because they just don’t feel the sizzle that brings erotic romance to life.
If your goal is to write erotic stories that get your readers excited, it helps if you’re excited during the writing process. Your characters and plot alone should get your blood flowing in all the right directions, but there are some simple tricks that you can use to get in the mood before you sit down to write erotic romance.
Slip into Something More Comfortable
Have you ever heard that some professionals who work from home get up and dress in business attire even though they’re sitting in a private home office all day? This is similar to the common advice that you should dress up from head to toe when doing a job interview over the phone.
If you look the part, you’re more likely to feel the part. Take that phone interview wearing the pajamas that your newborn just spit up on, and you’re not likely to feel as focused and confident as you would in a business suit.
When writing erotic fiction stories, this means that you should slip into something that makes you feel sexy. This means something different to everyone, so dig through your wardrobe and find outfits that make you feel desirable. This may mean writing completely naked, slipping into a silky teddy with killer heels, or wearing your lover’s oversized shirt just so you can smell him while writing your erotic fiction short stories.
Try Something New in Your Personal Life
Whether you would classify yourself as vanilla or a total freak, you can elevate your ability to write good erotica by stepping beyond your comfort zone. Use your creativity, daydreams and fantasies to come up with new erotic experiences that you can personally enjoy.
If you can’t think of anything new on your own, take a trip to an adult store or spend some time browsing naughty websites online. Just looking at the variety of products that are now available may give you some great ideas. Of course, reading a lot of published erotica may helps as well. The innovative experiences that writers are now giving their characters are quite impressive.
If you don’t have a sexual partner at the moment, don’t let that stop you. Learning to please your own body or simply modeling nude in the bedroom mirror can help you when writing erotic fiction stories. It’s more about awakening your sensual side and understanding how your body moves than actually having sex.
Warm Up with Erotica Writing Prompts
If your words feel forced or embarrassingly immature, give yourself permission to write whatever comes to mind while following the lead of erotica writing prompts. You don’t want to be perfect, and this isn’t a part of your erotic fiction short stories or novels unless you decide that they fit at a later time. For now, you’re simply writing freestyle and allowing whatever bubbles up in your mind to hit the page.
You can spend as little as five or 10 minutes with a prompt and then move back to writing erotic fiction stories or novels that you hope to share with the world one day. Think of it as foreplay, and then get down to the business of pushing your characters to their next big challenge.
Author Cheri Loughlin has an amazing list of 300 erotic story prompts that every writer of erotica should bookmark. If you want to take it a step further by investing in a prompt journal or eBook, here are a few suggestions:

Fill Your Environment with Eroticism
Many writers create playlists with music that evokes the emotions that they want to convey through their work. You can do the same to put your mind in the right place while you write erotic romance.
While music that makes you feel naughty, sensual and ready for action is a good idea, you can also watch romance movies or even allow porn to play in the background while you write. Your focus should be on what you’re writing, but a well-timed moan in the background could put you in the perfect mood for writing a stellar sex scene or getting your characters in touch with their flirty sides.
This is my biggest advice for anyone writing erotic fiction stories: Just sit down and write until your time is up. Rough drafts are supposed to be just that – rough! Get the storyline and your creative ideas on the page, knowing that you can spice up the sex scenes and work out the kinks later.
Erotic fiction short stories are supposed to arouse and tease, so allow yourself to feel aroused and playful while writing.
